How Many Sparklers Do I Need for a Wedding?
Updated: 1 day ago

The last song has played, your guests are gathering outside, and the wedding exit you pictured is about to become real: a glowing path of happy faces and the two of you walking into the photos you will keep forever. So how many sparklers do you need? The easy answer is one per guest, plus extras. The better answer accounts for attendance, sparkler size, your timeline, and the few guests who will happily light a second one.
The quick answer
For a traditional send-off, plan on one sparkler for every guest who will take part, plus 10% to 20% extra. If you expect 100 guests at your exit, 110 to 120 sparklers is the comfortable number.
The extras are not overthinking. A few sparklers get dropped, a guest arrives late to the line, or your photographer asks for one more pass. A small buffer means no one watches from the sidelines because the count came up short.
Guests at the send-off | Sparklers to order |
|---|---|
25 | 30 |
50 | 60 |
75 | 85 to 90 |
100 | 110 to 120 |
150 | 165 to 180 |
200 | 220 to 240 |
The newlyweds usually do not need their own sparklers for a classic exit, since they are the ones walking through the tunnel. If you want a few photos of the two of you holding sparklers, add two more.
Then round up to the nearest pack. Our 18-inch sparklers come in packs of 100, 150, 200, 250 or 300, and our 36-inch sparklers in packs of 50, 100, 150, 200 or 250. Our 8-inch sparklers are sold as one bulk case of 1,728.
Count who will be there, not who you invited
Your invitation count is rarely the right number. Start with your realistic RSVP total, then think about who will still be at the venue at send-off time. If your exit is at 10:30 p.m. after a long reception, some older relatives, parents with young children and early travelers may have gone home.
If you are unsure how many will stay, order for your full expected guest count and keep the extras on hand. Guests have a funny way of appearing the moment something starts glowing.
Add more only for a real second moment
One sparkler per guest is perfect for a single send-off. Order two per guest only if you have a real plan for both.
For example, you might want one round for sunset portraits and another for the exit. In that case two per participating guest makes sense, because a partly burned sparkler cannot be saved for later.
Other moments to count separately:
Photos: one sparkler per person, per photo. Ten photos with five people each is 50 sparklers.
First dance or cake cutting: one per person taking part. Ten guests around the dance floor is 10 sparklers.
There is one exception: if your venue only allows a short, supervised exit, buying two per person may leave you with sparklers you cannot use there. Check the venue's rules first. Fire restrictions, local rules and venue policies always get the final word.
Pick your size before you finalize the count
The number matters, but so does the sparkler in each guest's hand.
8-inch sparklers (about 30–45 seconds) are best for quick moments: a cake cutting, a first dance, a fast photo, or a small group that can light up quickly. They are also the size to ask your venue about if you want sparklers indoors. For a full exit there is less room for delays, because the first sparklers may be nearly done by the time the last guests are lit.
18-inch sparklers (about 1.5–2 minutes) hit the sweet spot for most weddings. They give a bright, photogenic glow, a longer handle, and enough time for a proper aisle. Many shops call this size "20-inch"; ours measures 18 inches, so that is how we list it.
36-inch sparklers (about 3–3.5 minutes) create the big, lingering glow that looks best with a large crowd, a long exit path, or a photographer who wants several shots. If your send-off involves 100-plus guests or a slow walk, they make the moment feel relaxed instead of hurried. They cost more and need more space, but you get more time.

Make sure every sparkler lights quickly
A beautiful exit should not start with 80 guests lighting one tiny flame from another tiny flame. Put two or three reliable adults in charge of lighting. A butane torch or long utility lighter is much faster than matches, especially outdoors.
Start at one end of the line, light several sparklers at once, and move down the row. Ask guests to hold sparklers out and angled away from faces, hair, dresses and decorations. For a big group, form two lines and light from both ends. Then walk slowly. It gives your photographer time to catch the light, the laughter and that just-married look.
Plan for guests who should not hold sparklers
Not every guest needs to take part directly. Young children should be closely supervised, and some venues prefer that children not hold lit sparklers at all. Guests with mobility concerns may be more comfortable cheering from a safe spot.
They are still part of the celebration. Place them near the start or end of the route so they can see you and appear in photos. If your count includes children who will not hold sparklers, you can trim it slightly, but keep your buffer.
Keep it safe and easy to clean up
Set a metal bucket of water or sand at the end of the exit route and tell guests exactly where to drop spent sparklers. Never toss them in the regular trash while they are hot. One short announcement from the DJ or planner covers it: enjoy the glow, keep it pointed away from others, and put finished sparklers in the bucket.
Choose an open outdoor area away from dry grass, low branches, fabric draping and crowded doorways. Your venue may also require a set location, a fire extinguisher nearby, or a set time. Confirm those details well before the wedding week. More tips are in our wedding sparkler safety guide.
When to order
Order once your RSVP count is settled, with time to spare. Orders placed by 3 PM Central ship the same day by UPS Ground from Center, Texas, and orders over $50 ship free.
